As part of German curator Olaf Bessenbacher’s promotion of the opening of his new Hout Bay art gallery, S Art, he partnered with Stuttaford Van Lines’ Fine Art division. This initiative brings mobile art galleries installed in the back of SVL art trucks to Cape Town’s city centre on a monthly basis.
A long-running tradition in Cape Town’s art scene is the monthly conversion of Long and Church streets into an engaging art walk, with several local galleries participating.
Ahead of S Art opening on May 17, Olaf brought an idea that he’d been toying with for years to fruition: through a mobile ‘pop up’ exhibition, he could bridge the gap between his new gallery in Hout Bay and the crowds of art enthusiasts in the city centre.
Building off the success of the first such pop up gallery on May 7 – with Stuttaford Van Lines’ truck parked right in the middle of the action, on the corner of Long and Church streets – Olaf and SVL’s Cape Town branch are committed to new exhibitions in the same location on the first Thursday of every month (from around 17:00 to 21:00).
Speaking shortly after the first exhibition pictured here, Olaf had this to say: “Our great thanks to Stuttaford Van Lines. The superb and professional service and support from your Fine Art department made it possible to bring art to the people with our S ART Pop Up Gallery Truck concept. The First Thursday crowd simply loved it!”
It appears likely that this promising new art platform will be expanded going forward, with further exhibitions being considered for high-profile markets and art festivals – look out for updates in future Stuttaford Van Lines newsletters!
